‘The history of book design can be split into two eras: before graphic designer Chip Kidd and after.’ – Time Out New York.
Chip is a NY writer and graphic designer. His book jacket designs for Alfred A. Knopf (where he has worked since 1986) helped spawn a revolution in the art of American book packaging. As an editor of books and comics for Pantheon, Kidd has worked with some of the most brilliant talents practising today, including Chris Ware, Art Spiegelman, Dan Clowes, Kim Deitch, Charles Burns, Ben Katchor and Alex Ross. The Cheese Monkeys, Kidd’s first novel, was published by Scribner in 2001 and was a national bestseller and NY Times Notable Book of the Year. Two comprehensive monographs of his work, Chip Kidd: Book One (2005, with an introduction by John Updike), and Chip Kidd: Book Two (2017, with an introduction by Haruki Murakami) were both published by Rizzoli. In 2007 Kidd was awarded the National Design Award for Communications, and in 2014 he received the AIGA medal.
