Kjøbenhavns Handelsbank

Niels Hartmann

The logo symbolizes the movement of a spinning coin. Since its introduction in 1977, and until the merger with Den Danske Bank and Provinsbanken in 1990, this logo for Kjøbenhavns Handelsbank – later just Handelsbanken – worked as a beautiful, clear and unique trademark for the company, both on signage, checks and many other types of stationery used by the bank. Niels Hartmann, Denmark (1967)

Niels Hartmann was the one exception of all the early Danish members of the AGI who made their name before the war. He belonged to a younger generation but became one of the leading postwar Danish designers for print, symbols and typography. He was responsible for the brilliant modular Lego sign concept that has been and is being used all over the world. It adjusts to all requirements in all conceivable situations. The way it is designed, it is almost impossible to apply it wrongly, so it always looks good – no mean achievement.
