Gastrotypographicalassemblage

Lou Dorfsman

Gastrotypographicalassemblage was a 35 feet (11 m) wide by 8.5 feet (2.6 m) tall mural that decorated the cafeteria in the CBS Building in New York from 1966 until 1991. The wall was designed by Lou Dorfsman, who initially executed a rough sketch and made a full-size sample panel. His close friend Herb Lubalin, assisted by Tom Carnase, worked out the compositions and lettering of the additional eight panels under Dorfman's direction. It consisted of 1,650 letters and 65 objects.

    Lou Dorfsman, USA (1955)

Dorfsman graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. He joined CBS in 1946 and never really left: after 41 years of being ‘Mr CBS’, Dorfsman is still around. Today he can be found at the Museum of Television and Radio, NY, living and working with all those familiar artefacts of a lifetime in this audiovisual world. He believed a designer should be a ‘master planner’, and that was what Lou was for CBS. He was responsible for advertising, print, film titling, marketing, book design, direct mailing, television promotion and environmental design. In all these fields he set and maintained award-winning standards. During his years at CBS, television grew to its maturity and radio made a strong comeback. Lou has been honoured with numerous Gold Medals from NY ADC, has been inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame, served as President of the ADC, and received three honorary degrees from colleges and universities, and AIGA’s coveted Gold Medal
