      Adrian Frutiger, Switzerland (1980)

Adrian Frutiger needed know-how and meticulous skill to attain the crucial knowledge that legibility and beauty are brothers. Good type brings the spirit of the author and the reader closer together. In this Frutiger found his life’s goal. ‘The students of 1968 left the craft aside in their impatience and tried to solve problems using only their intelligence. I myself couldn’t manage with the word alone, without hands and tools.’ He is fascinated by the simplification of signs, symbols and characters: signature expressions, trademarks, sounds, images. He began his career working with lead type, then was confronted by the evolution of printing techniques and the revolutions in type production created by light and electronics. Assignments to create the signage for airports and the Paris Metro gave him experience of legibility in all type sizes. Frutiger then got involved in Indian scripts and discovered the underlying connections of Indo-European culture.
