      Markus Weisbeck, Germany (2011)

Markus Weisbeck is Professor of Graphic Design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
His teaching approaches design as a field of research. In open, collaborative formats, students develop their own positions at the intersection of visual communication, typography, digital media and cultural context. Graphic design is taught here not as an applied craft, but as a cultural practice that analyses, questions and reformulates visual systems.
Weisbeck founded the "Space for Visual Research" – a laboratory for the experimental development of graphic, abstract and pictorial systems that is unique in its form. Situated outside conventional design practice and fine art, the Space explores aesthetics as an independent discipline.
Studio Markus Weisbeck realises projects for international cultural institutions, public clients and organisations – including the German Design Council, the Federal Ministry of Finance, Sternberg Press, documenta, the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Arte and the Biennale di Venezia.
His work is held in public and private collections, including the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.

The Space for Visual Research was established at the Bauhaus University in Weimar in 2013 as a workshop and laboratory for experimental research into new graphic, abstract, and visual worlds. The Space’s mission is to support the exploratory urge for new aesthetics, in particular by empowering design students to create their own individual imagery.
