    Ephraim E. (Ed) Benguiat, USA (1980)

    Ephraim E. Benguiat was a type designer and calligrapher who studied at Columbia University and the Workshop School of Advertising, New York. In 1953 he was appointed associate director of Esquire magazine. In 1962 he became a typographic design director of Photo-Lettering, a position he held for decades. He joined ITC International Typeface Corporation and was made a vicepresident. With Herb Lubalin he worked on the in-house magazine U&LC. He has created many logotypes for leading publications: The New York Times, Playboy, Esquire, Look, Readers’ Digest and Sports Illustrated. He was a long-time teacher at the School of Visual Arts, NY, and he also taught at Columbia University. Among the several hundred typefaces which he (partly co-) designed are: Souvenir, Avant Garde Gothic Condensed, Korinna, Tiffany, Bauhaus, Bookman, Benguiat, Barcelona, Modern, Caslon, Panache, Century Handtooled, Cheltenham Handtooled, Edwardian Script. Most of these typefaces are part of the ITC Collection.
