Read full biographyWalter Bohatsch began his career as a graphic designer in 1973 in Montreal, where he worked for John German Inc. and Gottschalk + Ash. From 1978-1981 Walter attended the postgraduate course for Structural Film and Graphic Design at the School of Design in Basel, Switzerland. In 1988 he took further courses at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and at Harvard University, Cambridge.
In 1983 he set up his own office in Vienna, Austria. He taught ‘Experimental and Computer-Supported Typography’ from 1989 to 1992 at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1993 he and his former employee Clemens Schedler established Bohatsch und Schedler GmbH; in 1997 the firm was restructured. In 1998 he taught ‘Integral Design’ for the ‘Inter Media’ program at the University for Applied Sciences in Vorarlberg, Austria.
Walter is the initiator of the video work akustisch-visuelle Fragmente together with the composer Toro Pérez Germán as well as the Typoji project and creator of the Typojis https://www.typojis.com/de/. Since 2019, Walter Bohatsch has devoted himself exclusively to free artistic work with a focus on language, typo and perception.
