He began working with the Times in 1997, when he art-directed the Op-Ed page and developed the Op-Art feature, a space for artists and cartoonists to contribute their own observations, independent of any article. Blechman publishes, edits, and designs the political underground magazine NOZONE. Rallying a coalition of designers, illustrators and cartoonists, NOZONE provides a place for social critique through art. He is also principal of Knickerbocker Design, a graphic design and illustration firm in New York. Blechman has taught at the School of Visual Arts, and led a course in political propaganda at Maryland Institute College of Art. He has lectured and hosted numerous graphic design events, including ‘Hell No! Graphic Designers and the War’, and his work was included in the 2006 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial. He is the author of Fresh Dialogue One: New Voices in Graphic Design.
