Lakanna

Ivan Garcia

Lakanna is a carpentry workshop in Mexico City that implements Japanese technique for assembling furniture with modular pieces, not using nails but complex wood joints. Our approach was to further highlight this principle of modularity trough our grid and editorial system, taking inspiration from "Modulor", a measurment system created by Le Corbusier. The identity also refers to Mexican brutalist architecture, in the logo and graphic elements giving a colossal and oversized effect.

    Ivan Garcia, Mexico (2017)

Ivan Garcia, AKA Futura, is the founder and director of his namesake creative design studio, Futura. Raised in a Jehovah’s Witness family, he was later kicked out from his community and found his first break into the design world in the antithesis of his household: as a web designer for the porn industry. With no theoretical education about the rules of design, but driven by his curious character and a need to create something fresh, he founded his own studio at the age of 25.
For 16 years, Ivan has led more than 300 projects worldwide, operating from three pop-up offices in Tokyo and Kuwait, as well as from a global platform powered by a remote-work paradigm, even before the pandemic. Now based in Buenos Aires, Argentina - which feels like home - Futura continues to grow from strong connectivity and commitment to never compromise on the quality of top-notch design. Born in Mexico but based worldwide, Futura is the reflection of Ivan’s global dialogue through graphic design, where innovation, experimentation, and a refusal to take himself too seriously define his whole semantic universe.
