    Louis Silverstein, USA (1969)

    Early work included book and fashion advertising. Designed the prize-winning Russian language magazine Amepuka. Made film strips for labour organizations. Was a successful Promotion Art Director for The New York Times, then became Corporate Art Director of the NY Times Co., overseeing the design for the newspaper and 34 affiliated companies, such as WQXR. NYT was named in 1984 as ‘best-designed US newspaper’. HQ wrote that Silverstein had changed the way newspapers were produced. His honours include the NY ADC gold medal for the creation of the Op-Ed page, two Pulitzer Prizes, lifetime awards from the Society of News Design and Society of Publication Design. Elected to the NY ADC Hall of Fame, 1984. Silverstein was designer and executive editor of The Earth Times, a fortnightly, associated with the UN. He taught at the School of Visual Arts NY and has lectured widely in the US and Europe. His one-man show at Cooper Union travelled to Canada and Florida. Silverstein is also an author.
