COC Commemorative Coin

Koos Breen

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the ‘royal approval’ of the COC, the world’s oldest LGBTQIA+ rights organisation still in existence. Although the COC was founded in 1946, it was only recognised as a legal entity by the Dutch state in 1973. Fifty years on, the COC has had many triumphs, such as the recognition of gay marriage in 2001. This design was not selected for production.

    Koos Breen, Netherlands (2023)

Koos Breen stretches frontiers of disciplines and pushes them to edgy limits. He fluently shifts between being an art director, designer, and artist: continuously expanding his expertise and interests while challenging himself as much as the possible boundaries.

Koos hardly distinguishes between autonomous works and commissioned projects: different worlds intermingle and he thereby explores how objects and forms could function within a variety of disciplines, environments or scenes. He is trained as a graphic designer but his work has increasingly developed in other dimensions.

He works on commissioned graphic work as well as autonomous objects and spatial installations. The interplay between image and object, between physical and digital and between 2D and 3D forms the basis of his work. He often works with materials, tools and associated techniques outside the context of their original purpose. By placing them in different contexts, the boundaries of crafts and disciplines are explored and stretched.

Koos has been commissioned by royals and rappers as much as fashion designers and cultural institutions.
