Leibowitz attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art from 1936–39. He worked for three years as an art director for the Philadelphia Advertising Agency, before setting up his own fi rm. Matthew became a consultant/designer for many major firms, like IBM, RCA Victor, Sharp & Dohme, Spalding, Container Corporation of America (CCA), General Electric, N.W. Ayer & Son, the International Red Cross and others. No doubt, Lester Beall’s example was of great influence on his early work. He excelled at very sensitive designs, dynamic and yet balanced, with exemplary typography. Between 1941 and 1959 he received no less than 163 gold medals and other awards. His work is in the collections of NY MoMA, Denver Art Museum and Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris. His archive is kept by Rochester Institute of Technology.
