Sign of Nature

Jean-Benoît Levy

Created in 2020 in the midst of a global virus paralysis, this poster expresses the freedom and the chaos of the nature in conflict with the human attempts to create arbitrary system to defend the existence of its own species. The poster uses graphically simple marks given by the nature opposed to abstract systems created by humans. In any case, the shapes found in any human alphabets and signs systems contain the same DNA found in nature, which is straight lines, movements, and organic curves.

    Jean-Benoit Levy (JBL) is a Swiss-American graphic designer, visual artist, educator and occasional troublemaker of visual conventions.
    Trained at the Basel School of Design in the Swiss tradition of typography by Armin Hofmann, Wolfgang Weingart, Peter von Arx and more,
    he founded Studio A N D in Basel in 1989, working across identity, typography, publishing and visual communication.
    Since 2006, he has been based in San Francisco while maintaining an international practice between Europe, the US and Asia. His work and teaching explore the spaces between graphic design, visual culture and everyday communication.
    He shares his experience through exhibitions, workshops and teaching, with recurring interests in street advertising, typography, visual systems and the unexpected ways images communicate.
