    Marcel Jacno, France (1952)

    Marcel Jacno was a self-taught graphic and type designer and typographer. His best-known design was the Gauloises cigarettes package that he produced in 1936 and refined in 1946. His other major achievement was the design of several fonts for the type foundry Deberny et Peignot. He designed Le Film (1934), Scribe (1937), Jacno (1950) and the stencil typeface Chaillot (1954), used for the logo of the Théatre National Populaire (TNP) and shown on more than 100 TNP posters. Composition, form and typography were completely integrated and his posters were always recognized, even before they were read. Among his other clients were Courvoisier, Guerlain and Shell. He taught advertising at the École Technique de Publicité and the École de l’Union des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Jacno was the author of Anatomie de la lettre (1978). Although he received an Oscar de la Publicité in 1968 for his work and many other awards, he remained a modest and self-effacing man.
