    Alan Kitching, UK (1994)

Alan Kitching RDI AGI Hon FRCA is one of the world's foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. Born in 1940 in Darlington, Co. Durham, he began his journey as an apprentice compositor from 1956 to 1961. During this time, he crossed paths with Anthony Froshaug and together they co-established the experimental printing workshop at Watford College of Technology, School of Art in 1964. While working closely with Froshaug until 1967, Alan continued their collaboration on student projects at the Central School of Art & Design. In 1973, Alan initiated his own design practice in London. Four years later, he partnered with Derek Birdsall (AGI) at Omnific and commenced letterpress printing there in 1985. Subsequently, he established The Typography Workshop in Clerkenwell in 1989, concurrently commencing teaching through letterpress at the Royal College of Art from 1991 to 2006. In 1994, Alan joined forces with designer/writer Celia Stothard (later his wife). Continuing his dedication to design and printing, Alan operates from his workshop in Kennington, London. His work is proudly represented by Advanced Graphics London and Coningsby Gallery.
