Gene Federico, USA (1960)
Gene was a member of Leon Friend’s legendary Art Squad at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Pratt Institute (1939), with a special interest in typography. After he served in WW2, Gene worked for Fortune magazine as associate art director with Will Burtin. Soon after, he joined Grey Advertising, followed by DDB and Douglas D. Simon as art director. In 1965 he formed Lord Geller Federico Einstein Inc. During his career his clients included Woman’s Day, IBM, Container Corporation of America, Harper’s Bazaar, Random House and Columbia Records. For Napier Co. Jewelry he worked single-handedly for almost two decades. His great affection for type is evident in his publication Love of Apples. Unusually for an AGI member, Gene was a practising graphic designer as well as an advertising art director. He was awarded by NY ADC, AIGA and TDC, and in 1980 was elected to the NY ADC Hall of Fame. He also received honorary doctorates from Parsons and Pratt.
