Volker studied at the Fachschule für angewandte Kunst (technical college of applied arts), Berlin-Oberschöneweide and at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee under Professors Klemke, Mohr and Wittkugel. From 1978 he was a teacher of graphic design and set design in Berlin. 1991–97: professor of set and costume design, Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. 1997–2000: professor of illustration the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Works: set and costume designs (Berlin, Florence, Hamburg), exhibition designs, posters, book and illustrations. Participation in numerous exhibitions all over the world as graphic designer and set designer. He has received several awards for poster designs, including: The 100 Best Posters and The Most Beautiful Books in Germany, 1981, 1983 and 1985; Berliner Zeitung Critics Award for set design; Silver Medal for costume design at the International Quadrennial for Scenery Design in Prague; GDR Kunstpreis, 1986; Silver Medal, Poster Biennale, Lahti, 1987.
