Chwast graduated at the Cooper Union. He is a founding partner of Push Pin Studios, whose distinct style has had a worldwide influence on visual communications. In 1981 the studio’s name was changed to The Pushpin Group. He has designed and illustrated over thirty children’s books and has developed several typefaces. The studio published The Push Pin Graphic, (1957–81) and now The Nose, with Steven Heller. Chwast works in a variety of styles and media. His works featured in major galleries and museums in the US, Europe, Japan, Brazil and Russia. He has had one-man shows of his paintings, sculptures and prints in the US and elsewhere. His posters are in the permanent collection of NY MoMA, the Cooper- Hewitt Museum, the Library of Congress, the Gutenberg Museum and the Israel Museum, among others.He has an honorary Ph.D in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design and is in the AD Hall of Fame; he was awarded the AIGA medal 1985. He became a Royal Designer for Industry in 2005.
