Rolf Müller studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm and apprenticed with Josef Müller-Brockmann. From 1965 on, he ran his own design office. From 1967–72 he worked with Otl Aicher, on the design of the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. He designed information and signage systems for exhibitions and architectural complexes for clients who include the University of Regensburg and the municipality of Bonn. He taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich as well as in other design schools. He held a one-man exhibition on corporate design and typography – the show travelled throughout Germany in 1985. His posters are represented in collections in New York, Warsaw, Munich and Zurich. He was editor of High Quality magazine, which he also designed.
