Rémy was the grandson of George and the son of Charles Peignot, from the famous Deberny et Peignot type foundry. He studied at St Gallen art college in Switzerland, before he started to work for his father’s fi rm. In 1955, Rémy designed the typeface Cristal, which was very important because it became part of the first set of typefaces to be printed on a dry transfer paper called Typophane. Later, after the installation of the first Lumitype photo typesetting machine, Peignot produced fascinating type compositions, made possible by this new technology. For three years, he also was the art director of the magazine En Direct. In 1968 he set up his own studio.
