A gifted designer, organizer, promoter, cosmopolitan, educator and author. Studied in Leiden, Paris and London. Director of design at his family’s printing house Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co, Hilversum (1951–74). There he had his first own small gallery, where he held exciting exhibitions about the (inter)national graphic design scene. At the same time he published his renowned Kwadraatbladen, a series of square brochures on various design or art-related subjects, including Wim Crouwel’s New Alphabet and Anthon Beeke’s Nude Alphabet. Chair of visual communication at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn (1980–82), visiting professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven. Secretary General of Icograda and later, board member of AGI. President of the Dutch ADC. Main clients included the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, DSM Chemicals and the Dutch PTT, for which he created many stamps. He was also, with his firm Mercis, the welldressed businessman behind the global success of Dick Bruna’s work.
