Eksell studied with Hugo Steiner, Prague in 1939– 41. He trained at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1946–47. In 1947 he organized the first exhibition of American commercial art in Sweden. His work was shown in numerous exhibitions in Paris, London, Lausanne, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Milan, Vienna, and more. He was included in books like 42 Years of Graphis Covers (1987), World Trademarks and Logotypes I and II (1986 and 1987), First Choice (1989), and World Trademarks: 100 Years (1997). Eksell pioneered corporate identity programmes, worked on book illustrations and advertising, and wrote five books and many articles on design, advertising, architecture and professional training. He was elected to the Platina Academy, is an honorary member of the Society of Swedish Designers, and holds the state-awarded title of Professor. Eksell was the subject of a major exhibition in 1999 at the Malmö Form Design Centre; it later travelled to Vaxsjö and Stockholm.
