Dumbar’s career spans more than 30 years, and he has consistently sought to raise the standard of graphic design and visual communications, both at home and abroad. He was raised in Indonesia, and the resulting dichotomy of place has impacted his views and responses to the world ever since. He studied graphic design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague, and concluded his studies in the postgraduate graphic design programme at the RCA, London. Dumbar has held several academic posts, including visiting professor at the RCA, the University of Bandung, Indonesia, Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, DesignLabor in Bremerhaven and the Royal Academy in The Hague. He has served on a number of influential juries, together with, among others, I. M. Pei, Alessandro Mendini, and A.R. Penck. He has received honorary degrees from Humberside Polytechnic and Southampton Institute and is a member of the ADG Buenos Aires, the British D&AD, and the Dutch BNO.

    Dumbar’s career spans more than 30 years, and he has consistently sought to raise the standard of graphic design and visual communications, both at home and abroad. He was raised in Indonesia, and the resulting dichotomy of place has impacted his views and responses to the world ever since.
