Cipe Pineles emigrated to the USA in 1923 and was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute, NY, 1927–31. Started off in an industrial design practice, but joined Condé Nast Publications in 1933. There, Dr M.F. Agha taught her the principles of magazine art direction through the 30s and early 40s. She was the first female art director for mass media, the first woman in the all-male NY ADC and AGI. The first also, to hire fine artists to illustrate the publications. She was also the first woman elected to the NY ADC Hall of Fame (1975). She worked with Dr Agha on Vogue and Vanity Fair and was appointed as art director of Glamour in 1942, collaborating with famous photographers, designers and artists. In 1959 she became a freelance designer, working mainly for Will Burtin; they married in 1961. She was the art director of Lincoln Center 1965–72. Cipe played an important role in Parsons School of Design, NY, teaching and designing the school’s promotional material.

    Cipe Pineles emigrated to the USA in 1923 and was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute, NY, 1927–31. Started off in an industrial design practice, but joined Condé Nast Publications in 1933.
