Art Paul, designer and art director, was associated with Playboy magazine for three decades. He trained in his hometown Chicago at the Art Institute and the Institute of Design. He designed the first issue of Playboy and the famous bunny logo in 1953. Joining the magazine as its founding art director, he took an adventurous, award-winning approach to editorial design and illustration. In the seventies, Paul organized several major international touring art exhibitions of work commissioned by him for Playboy. He retired from the magazine in 1982 to establish Art Paul Design and devote more time to his personal work. For the past twelve years, he has focused entirely on drawing and painting. Paul was inducted into the ADC’s Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2006 he received the Society of Publication Designers’ Herb Lubalin Award for his lifetime achievement. He has been a trustee of Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art and a governor-appointed trustee of the Illinois Summer School of the Arts.
