    Michael Rand, UK (1976)

Michael Rand was a pioneering British designer and art director who transformed modern journalism. Born on 7 April 1929, he studied at Goldsmiths’ College in London and began his career at the Daily Express. Joining The Sunday Times Magazine in 1962, he remained its art director for over thirty years, redefining magazine design through bold imagery and narrative structure—what he called “a bit of grit and glamour.” He balanced war photography, fashion and pop culture, commissioning photographers like Don McCullin and Leni Riefenstahl. His full-bleed spreads and minimalist layouts reshaped photojournalism. Internationally recognised, he received the 1989 Infinity Award for Design and belonged to the Alliance Graphique Internationale. A curious, fearless eye, he also chaired the UK World Press Photo committee and was a Royal Photographic Society fellow. Married to painter Sheila Ware for nearly seventy years, he was an avid sailor. Michael Rand died on 12 May 2025, aged 96, leaving a lasting legacy in editorial design.
