‘Plakatkunsthof Rüttenscheid’

The ‘Plakatkunsthof Rüttenscheid’ (a poster gallery in Essen, Germany) is since 1998 an annual meeting point for the international poster design world. In co-operation with the German Postermuseum (which is now situated in the magnificent, enlarged and partly rebuilt Folkwang Museum) this gallery awards annually ‘the longest prize in the world’. It consists of a silk streamer of some 2.5 meter length, designed by Uwe Loesch. The AGI members Niklaus Troxler and Loesch are assisting the owner/organizer Viktor Seroneit as his artistic advisers. Felix Büttner also belongs to that permanent team. Among the former award winners were such specialized poster designers as Kari Piippo, Alain Le Quernec, He Jiangping, Istvan Orosz, Melk Imboden, Mieczyslaw Wasilewski, Anette Lenz and Waldemar Swierzy. This years’ award winner is Stephan Bundi (1950) from Berne. A fine, large selection of the laureates’ posters is on show in the staircases of the Grillo Theatre in the inner town of Essen.

'In his own words' presents a selection of lectures and articles delivered by Wim Crouwel between 1973 and 2006. Crouwel’s texts, who has lectured all over the world, are highly interesting because they document a lengthy and important career as a designer (professor and museum director) that spans from the early postwar years until the first decennium of the 21st century. This material is inspiring because it mirrors a highly committed professional: a pragmatist, critical observer and at some decisive points: a utopian even. The outgoing/diplomatic character of Crouwel, who has always dressed immaculately, is shown in a small portfolio of portraits, made by different photographers over a period of almost sixty-five years.
